AUG

AUG, or *Armee Universal Gewehr* (universal army rifle), is an Austrian bullpup automatic rifle designed in the 1970s. It quickly gained popularity due to its modular design, futuristic appearance, and high accuracy. Today, the AUG is used by armed forces and police in many countries around the world, as well as by sports shooters.

What does it mean that the AUG is a bullpup design?

The bullpup configuration is characterized by placing the magazine and breech mechanism behind the trigger, in the buttstock. This allows the weapon to be shorter while maintaining barrel length, which translates into better maneuverability. This is especially useful in confined spaces such as vehicles or buildings.

It is worth adding that the bullpup configuration has both supporters and opponents. Some appreciate it for its compactness, while others criticize it for its poorer balance and difficult handling for left-handed shooters (although modern designs, such as the AUG A3, are adapted for both hands).

AUG: a short history of the Austrian rifle

The history of the AUG dates back to the 1970s, when the Austrian army was looking for a successor to the aging StG 58 rifles (a licensed version of the FN FAL). Steyr Mannlicher undertook the task of creating a modern weapon that would meet the requirements of the battlefield. Design work, led by a team under the direction of Horst Wespy, resulted in the creation of the AUG - a rifle that revolutionized the approach to the construction of firearms.

In 1977, the AUG was officially adopted into service with the Austrian army, and soon after, other countries began to order it. Licensed production began in Australia and Saudi Arabia, among others. The AUG was constantly being modernized and improved, resulting in subsequent versions such as the AUG A2, AUG A3 and AUG Z.

AUG modular design - what does this mean in practice?

One of the key features of the AUG is its modular design. This means that the weapon consists of several easily replaceable modules, such as:

• Barrel (various lengths available, from short carbine barrel to long sniper barrel)
• Bolt
• Receiver with mounting rail
• Trigger mechanism
• Buttstock

Thanks to this, the AUG can be quickly adapted to different tasks and conditions. Replacing the barrel takes only a few seconds and does not require the use of tools. The modular design also makes cleaning and maintenance of the weapon easier.

AUG in 5.56 mm NATO caliber: why this choice?

The AUG is standardly powered by 5.56 mm NATO ammunition. Why was this caliber chosen? For several reasons:

• Light bullet: 5.56 mm ammunition allows a soldier to carry more rounds.
• High speed: The 5.56 mm bullet is characterized by a high initial velocity, which translates into a flat trajectory and accuracy at longer distances.
• Availability: 5.56 mm NATO is a standard caliber used by many armies around the world, which facilitates logistics and supply.

Of course, the 5.56 mm caliber also has its drawbacks (less stopping power than, for example, 7.62 mm), but in the case of the AUG, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. It is worth noting that there are also AUG versions powered by 9 mm ammunition.

Use of AUG: from military to sports shooting

The AUG has found wide application in various fields:

• Military and police: The AUG is used by armed forces and police in many countries around the world. It is valued for its reliability, accuracy and modular design.
